It’s a well-known fact that binding your documents can make them look more professional. But what if you don’t have a binding machine? If that’s the case, don’t worry because here are three methods you can try:

• Screw posts.  Screw posts are a great choice when you don’t have a binding machine. Just punch holes in your document with a hole punch or paper drill, thread the posts through the holes, and secure them with a flat-head screwdriver. Screw posts can be used with documents up to 5” thick.
• Report covers.  If you’re in a hurry, report covers can be a lifesaver. Using clear report covers will make your work look more professional and it will make your customized title page stand out. Make sure you have some on-hand so you can bind at a moment’s notice.
• GBC ZipBind and ProClick spines.  If you have some pre-punched paper, you can use GBC ZipBind and ProClick spines. All you really need to use these supplies is the zipper-like tool that comes with with the spines to open and close them. Keep in mind that you need 19 holes in your paper for the ProClick spines and 32 holes for ZipBind supplies.

Plastic comb binding is one of the most popular document finishing methods available and it’s perfect for reports, proposals, and other professional documents. Combs are easy to use and you can make the binding process even easier by following these three tips:

• Make sure you measure the thickness of your document and choose a comb that can comfortably accommodate all of the pages. You want the pages to turn freely so that your work is easy to read.
• If you are binding a half-letter sized book and all you have are 11-inch combs, you can trim them with a pair of scissors. Don’t forget the disengage the appropriate punching dies on your machine. This will help you get the right hole pattern.
• When you open up your comb for binding, make sure you don’t open it up too much. If the comb is too open, it can make binding your work more difficult than it needs to be. (Plus, the comb could fly off the comb opener, which is very annoying.)

If you need to laminate an important document, choosing the right laminating pouch is essential. Luckily, this is easy to do. Just consider these three things:

• Consider size.  It’s important to choose a laminating pouch that will completely encapsulate your document. The pouch should be large enough to give you even borders around the document. If you use a pouch that’s a bit too large, you can easily trim the excess film with a rotary trimmer.
• Think about thickness.  You need to choose a pouch that isn’t too thick for your laminator. Pouches generally range from 3 to 10 mil thick. (A mil is 0.001^th of an inch.) Thicker pouches will give your document more protection. Check your machine’s instruction manual to find out which pouches you can use.
• Go for the finish.  Finally, you should think about the pouch’s finish. Most pouches are glossy but there are some matte ones available. Matte pouches look slightly more professional and they make the document easier to read in bright light.
