Hunger is a major problem in Oregon. The problem stems from a number of factors, including unemployment and the ongoing recession. The Oregon Food Bank reports that 535,000 Oregonian lived below the poverty line in 2010. That equates to a shocking poverty rate of 13.8%, which means a lot of people require help getting the food they need for themselves and their families.

Luckily, the Oregon Food Bank is able to help out struggling people thanks to donations from individuals and companies like MyBinding.com. The Oregon Food Bank donated a record-setting 1 million boxes of food to individuals and families last year, and they couldn’t have done it without generous donations. MyBinding.com is proud have donated an incredible 2,621 pounds of food to the Oregon Food Bank last month. The food was donated by employees and delivered to the Oregon Food Bank on the day before Thanksgiving so that less fortunate Oregonians could have a happier Thanksgiving

MyBinding.com has always taken great pride in giving back to the community. This November, we had a chance to do so again by holding a food drive. We pledged to donate 2,500 pounds of food to the Oregon Food Bank which was a lofty goal. However, we were able to exceed this goal and ended up donating 2,621 pounds of food. How did we do it? We got creative in the following ways:

• Our donations were brought in by employees. Employees were divided into five teams based on department: Accounting, Administration, Marketing, Sales, and Warehouse. Each week, the members of the department that brought in the most food received prizes such as a Starbucks gift card or a meal at Old Chicago. This helped foster friendly competitive between the departments and encouraged employees to bring in generous donations.
• The Oregon Food Bank has the facilities to break up large quantities of food into smaller, more manageable parcels. Thus, some employees brought in large sacks of staples like rice and flour.
• Finally, many employees brought in a lot of canned goods (tuna, pasta sauce, soup, etc.) and large bottles of fruit juice. These items are very heavy, so it helped us exceed our goal.

On November 23 – the day before Thanksgiving – company representatives delivered 2,621 pounds of food to the Oregon Food Bank’s Beaverton location. That may seem like a lot of food and it is, especially since we originally aimed to donate 2,500 pounds of food.

You might be wondering how we were able to donate so much and it’s simple: the donations came from our employees. Employees were divided up into five teams based on department and prizes were given out weekly to the team that bought in the most food. People brought in a variety of food items ranging from canned spaghetti sauce to fruit juice, boxed pasta to canned tuna. Some employees even brought in large bags of rice to be repackaged at the Oregon Food Bank. In the end, the Marketing team won, having brought in 1,207 pounds of food.

In about a week, families all across the country will be celebrating Thanksgiving. In Oregon, some of them may receive donations that come from the Oregon Food Bank via MyBinding.com. The Inc. 5000 company has been holding a food drive since November 1 that will wrap up on the 23rd, the day before Thanksgiving.
