Martin Yale is known for delivering high quality office products and  the 1701 Paper Folder is no exception.  Designed to handle frequent medium to larger folding jobs, the 1701 is perfect for large mail rooms, churches, schools, and offices.  Easy operation at high speeds provides an efficient folder that will save you money.   Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of this machine.

Pros:

  • This machine is easy to use right out of the box.  No setup is necessary, other than plugging it in.  The paper tray automatically feeds and folds a stack of documents as large as legal size paper. Once the feed tray is empty, an auto shut-off sensor cuts power to the motor.  Preset options for legal, letter, and A4 size paper make switching a breeze.  The retarder self-adjusts for various paper thicknesses and a precision paper skew adjustment mechanism helps to ensure all your documents come out precisely folded, not crooked.  In the rare case of a paper jam, the automatic jam detector alerts the user right away.  Neatly creased items emerge from the folder via conveyor belt exit.
  • Six standard folds are created by this machine: “C” fold, single fold, “Z” fold, double parallel, baronial, and French or right angle fold.  Seventeen preset fold and paper size combinations are pre-programmed into this device with additional options for custom folds.
  • The hopper can hold up to 150 sheets at once.  But with speeds up to 9000 sheets per hour, the tray will need to be refilled quickly.  An additional manual bypass offers the insertion of up to five loose or stapled sheets for combined folding.
  • This folder can handle items as small as 3-1/2″ x 5″ and as large as 8-3/4″ x 14″.  Weights accepted range from 16lb bond to 70lb index.
  • Martin Yale offers a one year warranty on this product.  Be aware it doesn’t include consumable parts, labor, or shipping.

Cons:

  • As with many folders, this one is not rated to handle glossy paper.  Many offices don’t use coated materials for large folding jobs and won’t be affected by this downside.  However, if your business prefers glossy or coated paper for mass mailings, we suggest you look into an air-feed machine, such as the 959AF.  That model, though much more expensive, is rated to handle specialty paper types.
  • This machine only folds as large as legal size paper.  Often this is all the larger offices need to fold and this wouldn’t cause a problem for them.  But if your company needs to be able to fold bigger sheets, an upgrade to the next model up, the 1217A, will satisfy this.

Overall, the Martin Yale 1701 is well-able to accommodate the folding needs of any medium to large office.  The plethora of automatic features ensure simple, uncomplicated operation.  Electronically adjusted fold plates add to the high convenience of this device.  We think this paper folder is an excellent addition to any office.
