Designed to be used with Rhin-O-Tuff OD4300 coil spinner, this device is designed to add some functionality to that machine. It allows you to convert the OD4300 into a roller-style spiral coil inserter for small runs. In the following report, we weigh the relative merits of the OD 4100 and give you a list of what we consider to be this machine’s strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:

  1. Owning both the OD4100 and the OD4300 will give your organization a huge ammount of flexibility. If you are doing long runs of similar sized coil you can use the unique design of the OD4300 along with thirtysix inch long coil. However, if you want to do shorter runs or if you prefer to use twelve inch coil then you can simply connect the OD4100 and you will have a traditional roller style inserter. This makes this combination ideal for print shops and print for pay applications where production runs and sizes can varry dramatically.
  2. Speaking with end users, it seems the that OD4300 can be farily difficult to use and to set up. It requires the use of spindles and is best suited for use with long 36″ coils. However, the OD4100 is extremely easy to use especially for inexperianced users. When you are using the OD 4100 all you need to do in order to bind your book is to start the coil into the book’s edge and let the machine do the rest. We liked that there were no further adjustments that needed to be made.
  3. Setting up the OD 4100 for use with your 4300 is a very simple process. All the user needs to do is to set the machine on top of the 4300 and tighten a knob that fastens it into place. When the job is done, all you have to do is to unfasten the knob that is in the machine’s right side and lift. The process really could not be more simple and we were rather impressed with that.
  4. As opposed to the OD4300 which is only compatible with spiral coils that are up to thirty two inches in diameter, the OD 4100 can theoretically be used with larger sized coils. If you are going to do so, however, you should likely consider using a spine former to shape the edge of your book.

Weaknesses:

  1. Essentially just a set of rollers, the OD 4100 is not any kind of standalone machine and it can’t be used without the OD4300. The 4300 is what provides power to the rollers.
  2. In fact, because the 4300 is meant to be attached to either the OD4000 or OD4300 binding punch (or failing that, the OD3500 binding station), you will need more than the 4300 to use the OD 4100. Not a huge problem, just another way of clarifying that the OD 4100 is far from a standalone spiral coil inserter.
  3. Though rated for all diameters and pitches of spiral coil, we found this machine a little difficult to use with larger sized coils. However, we did find that it was considerably easier when we used an oval hole punching pattern.
